Dr. S. June Smith

       

Dr. S. June Smith was a pioneer for children with special needs in Lancaster County. Born in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, she graduated from Temple University with a Bachelor of Science degree in early childhood education. Dr. June, as she was commonly known, received her Masters degree at Columbia Teachers College. She furthered her education at Penn State University, where she was awarded a Doctorate, Psychology in 1945.

Dr. June served her community in the following ways:

  • Community Council of Lancaster
  • President, Mental Health Association Board
  • Hearing Center Board
  • Delegate, White House Conference on Children and Youth
  • State Committee for the Handicapped
  • Pennsylvania Association of the Mentally Retarded
  • Advisory Council, Bethany Nursery School for Retarded Children
  • Officer, Commonwealth Committee of the Medical College of Pennsylvania
  • Charter Member, Lancaster Soroptomist Club
  • Board, Goodwill Industries of Lancaster County
  • National Officer, Alpha Sigma Alpha
  • Member, Delta Kappa Gamma

In addition, Dr. June was a Fellow in the Pennsylvania Psychological Association and a Fellow in the American Psychological Association. She was active in the American Association for the Mentally Deficient and Pennsylvania Association for the Mentally Gifted.

Dr. June retired in 1971 after 30 years as director of special pupil services for the former Lancaster County Public Schools, now the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13. She died April 25, 2001 at the age of 95.
